About the Jaguar XJ-S
Already at the end of the sixties Jaguar realized that the life of the already iconic E-Type could not be stretched infinitely. The E-Type Series III was nevertheless sold in large numbers until 1975. But then finally the curtain fell for the ever-praised E-Type. It was time to present the successor; the Jaguar XJ-S. When it was introduced in Earls Court in September 1975, the XJ-S belonged to the most exclusive and advanced Gran Turismo in the world.
With its controversial design, the XJ-S called a lot of reactions right from the start. Many people had hoped for an F-Type, which would serve as a worthy successor to the E-Type. With its closed roof and 2 + 2 seats, the XJ-S was not what was expected. The design was simply not undisputed. Incidentally, the XJ-S was largely signed by William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer, who were also largely responsible for the appearance of the C, D and E-Type. Sayer was mainly inspired by the experiments he did in a wind tunnel. For example, the small spoiler under the front bumper is a result of these experiments and provides fifty percent less upward pressure and ten percent less air resistance.
Although the price of the XJ-S was a lot higher than people were used to from Jaguar, the XJ-S became a success. More and more enthusiasts embraced the car. The introduction of 5.3 liters V12 was the first major innovation for the XJ-S. This put an end to the exorbitant fuel consumption that the XJ-S suffered from. This whisper-quiet engine allows the coupe to travel passengers in style, silence and comfort at speeds of more than 200 km / h on the motorways of the European continent to their exotic destinations. Nevertheless, the new engine also had to be stopped regularly, because gasoline still liked the car.
After some minor changes in between, the beautiful model was redrawn in 1991, giving the car its third formal facelift. The front and rear bumper were replaced the most drastically with the new lamps. The name changed with this third series from XJ-S to XJS.
